What's included in a wedding catering quote, and what usually isn't

Two quotes for the same wedding can be thousands of pounds apart, often because of what each leaves out. Here's what's in my price, what's extra, and the questions to ask any caterer.

What's included in my price

Three courses start at £75 a guest. See every menu and its price on the weddings page.

What's priced separately

ExtraPrice
Canapés£12.50 a guest for three, £20 for five
Wine with the meal£16, £20 or £24 a guest, or your own at £4.50 a guest plus £10 corkage a bottle
Evening food£10 to £15 a guest, minimum 50 guests
Children's menu£20 a child
Tea, coffee and petit fours£6 a guest
Sharing cheese boards£9 a guest
Cake cutting and plating£2.50 a guest
Field kitchen, if the venue has no kitchen£20 a guest under 100 guests, £15 from 100
Tasting for four£200, taken off your bill when you book

Weddings under 60 guests have a minimum spend of 60 guests at that menu's price. A 30% deposit secures the date; 40% is due three months before and the balance 21 days before.

Ten questions to ask any caterer

  1. Is VAT included in the price, or added on top?
  2. Are the chefs and waiting staff included, and how many?
  3. Is crockery, cutlery, glassware and linen included, or hired separately?
  4. Is there a service charge?
  5. What happens if the day runs late, and is there a charge for it?
  6. Is there a corkage charge if we bring our own wine?
  7. Do you charge for cutting and serving the cake?
  8. Is there a charge for travel?
  9. Does the venue charge outside caterers a fee? (Ask the venue too.)
  10. What's the deposit, and when are the other payments due?

Questions

What should a wedding catering quote include?

At minimum: the food, the chefs and waiting staff, crockery and linen (or who supplies them), VAT, travel, and every extra such as canapés, drinks service and cake cutting, each priced.

Do caterers charge VAT on weddings?

Caterers who are VAT registered have to add 20%, and some quote without it. I'm not VAT registered, so there's no VAT to add to my prices.
